andy's birthday

If you're three years old, an invitation to your buddy's birthday party at Chuck E Cheese is like tickets to the Super Bowl. Not so much if you're a parent. Luckily, Daddy was Finn's chaperone. (Hence, the photos.)

the wit and wisdom of Finn Hazen

funkyFinn, originally uploaded by lisabagg.

• After listening to Beyonce's SIngle Ladies* on the car radio, he sighs and says, "Wow, mama. That is a great song."

• When Cormac comes with him the first day to daycare for a half day, gets his friends, one-by-one and starts introducing them. "Ella, this is Cormac. Cormac, Ella. Eli, this is Cormac. Cormac, this is Eli..."

• Corrects two-year-old Eli when he gets too close to Cormac and tells him not to be so rough. Then looks at Eli and says, "Eli, you're getting big."

I have many more to add, but I'm too sleep-deprived right now. Look here for more soon.

* No judgment!

Happy Day

IMG_0217.JPG, originally uploaded by lisabagg.

I told Finn this morning, "You know, this is a really exciting day. Barack Obama is our new president."

He totally flipped out, excited. And I was thinking, "Wow! Even preschoolers can get into the spirit!"

And then he said, "Barack Obama is bringing me new presents? Like Santa? Will he wrap them?"

But I guess he wasn't so far off, as I felt like today was Christmas for those of us who haven't felt patriotic for a good eight years. I'm so happy that my boys will grow up in a world where there's evidence of people are starting to be judged not by the color of their skin, but the content of their character. Here's to a more peaceful country.

finn and friends

The local weatherman just stated that temperatures in an actual meat locker would be currently warmer than it is Chicago. When you find yourself nostalgic for the temperatures of an actual freezer, you realize that something is not quite right in your world.

It's tough enough to handle this punishing weather when you are an adult who is supposed to be able to rationalize this sort of thing as a passing inconvenience. Try being a three-year-old who is cooped up in your home for days.

On weekends, we've been running out of things to do. So, when Finn suggested he have a party, I said fine. We basically had four friends over and ordered pizza and made cupcakes. Then went crazy in the basement for a while. Here is Finn with his little cuties--Ella, Delilah, Andy, and Sammy.

This almost makes up for the fact that he was up five or six times last night. Almost.

Another doppleganger, that only became obvious when I saw this picture of him.

A Finn and Cormac Update

I think that as far as Finn's concerned, Cormac's always been here. He works Cormac into all of his stories. He takes pride in every tiny baby achievement. (I think I hear my own voice echoed in some of his exultations--"Mama, will you LOOK at CORMAC? He's SMILING! Aren't you baby? AREN'T YOU SMILING? What a smart BABY!")

It's adorable to see these two together. Cormac fixes his huge eyes on Finn and already seems to think he's the coolest. Finn takes a big brother role, even bringing him his most special blanket, "Allen" (don't ask) when Cormac starts crying. And he says things like, "When I'm a grown-up and Cormac's a kid, I'll make him dinner. I'll give him kiwi because it's delicious and I'll be able to cut it with a knife because I'll be a grown-up."

Cormac is starting to look huge to me. He's already over 12 lbs. and eats CONSTANTLY. (Finn was an awesome eater, too. I don't think you have a choice if you're Shawn and my kid.) He still wants to be held all the time, which is a huge challenge. First of all, I have to go back to work soon. Second, it's exhausting. Third, he yells and yells at you if you try to put him down. Wish us luck while we sort this one out.

Welcome, Finley Ruth Dobkin!

Picture 14, originally uploaded by lisabagg.

Our friends, Angela Gengler Dobkin and her husband Carlos, welcomed a beautiful baby girl December 19th. Of course I love the name Finley for a little girl! The third of three girls, Finley will be the default baby doll for her big sisters. Congrats, Ange and Carlos!

My honorary Florida cousin, Anne Kilroy Burik, and her husband Todd just welcomed their first little boy on December 30th. As evidenced by these photos, Cooper is just darling. Welcome to the world, little man!
