a watched pot...

a watched pot

OK, in the space of a day, this pregnancy went from being comically uncomfortable ("I can't see my toes!") to downright agonizing ("I can't pee and I certainly can't roll myself out of this bed!") The only thing I can commit to doing is sitting on the couch and watching hours of The O.C. on DVD with the dog, buffered by a half-dozen pillows. In this state, don't be surprised if I name this kid Ryan, Seth or even Sandy.

For those of you worried about the potential damage done to the child by consuming so much mind-numbing television, I will tell you that at least I'm off the nonstop hurricane coverage.

an open plea to Baby H

Originally uploaded by lisabagg.
OK, kid. You are officially five days late. Your daddy and I thought that maybe you were taking Labor Day literally, and that you would make your arrival then. (In the proud tradition of your papa.) But yesterday came and went, with no Baby H.

I don't know if it is the incessant news coverage that I've been watching that makes you think that staying put might be a good idea. (I'll stop!) Or maybe the fact that we've had a good time together on maternity leave, swimming, eating, walking the dog, eating, reading, eating. But at this point, I'm a bit concerned that you will weigh 40lbs when you are born and already be able to walk.

I've posted this photo of your room as inspiration. It's so cozy! You have no less than 10 stuffed animals to cuddle, four homemade blankets, and a dresser full of adorable clothes. Not least of all, a bunch of people can't wait to meet you, most of all, me.

Your Mama

Dude. That is one overripe belly.

Yes, I know. Again with the black dress. It's the only one that still fits.

I guess you and Baby H won't be sharing the same birthday afterall, however.

banana milkshake

Legend has it that I was born very, very late after my due date after my mom had a banana milkshake. Shawn came home with the fixin's to make me one yesterday. Nice try, but even as uncomfortable as I am here at 40 weeks plus two days, I have a major pregnancy aversion to bananas. (Might as well be castor oil.) But check in with me in a week if the kid still hasn't arrived.

So for now, we wait. Have I mentioned how very hot it has been here?

Weird to be at the mercy of someone who hasn't even been born yet.

I know I've been toting around this belly for a good 39 weeks so far, but it's still shocking to me to see myself so undeniably huge. Please Note: As of August 26, 9p.m., the kid's still cookin', but it's any day now.

Very soon now, baby, belly, and I are going to have a good talk. We've had a good run. We've enjoyed nightly Ben & Jerry's binges, the best seats on BART, and the unapologetic comfort of elastic-waisted pants worn to public places both casual and not. Ours is a problem of economy of space. I've knocked over too many supermarket displays, I can no longer see my toes, and I must build momentum to roll myself not only out of bed, but out of your average seated position.

I'm not quite ready for baby, belly and I to part ways just yet. I am enjoying these last few days of pre-motherhood, floating ever-so-buoyantly at the local pool, sleeping in, and reading back issues of tabloid magazines. I do realize these halcyon days are numbered, to be replaced exclusively with talk of baby, boobs, and midnight feedings. I'm just saying that like the Bay Area's best rent-controlled apartments, this setup was a little too good to last.

the view from 38 weeks

Many apologies who those who got the accidental Google "announcement" yesterday about the arrival of Baby H. Pregnancy Brain + Technology = Inevitable Glitches. I was setting up an email group for the announcement--I promise the next time you hear from me, it will be to announce the good news for real(s).

The C-section has been cancelled, which means when the Hazen Heir arrives is anyone's guess. Care to wager when and how much the little guy will weigh?

waiting for baby

Here I am, biding my time until Baby H arrives. My hands seem to have grown in pace with my belly.
